Position

CMAP is hiring three field data collection interns during the summer of 2023 to assist with transportation system data collection in support of CMAP and its partner agencies. The interns will be responsible for collecting data to fulfill agency needs, described in detail below.

Essential functions

  • In-person and video camera-assisted utilization counts for bicycle/pedestrian facilities.
  • Installing video camera equipment for vehicular (passenger and truck) ranging from 6 hours to 24 hours.
  • In-person and video camera-assisted railroad crossing delay observation counts.
  • Formatting of traffic/usage related data from CMAP and other sources, and geocoding into CMAP ArcGIS archives.
  • Installation of radar devices to collect speed data.
  • Collect field condition on the components of public rights of way to assess accessibility for people with disabilities.

Field data collectors will receive work instructions and assignments from the Project Manager for Summer Field Data Collection - Transportation Networks. Work activities will primarily be in outside field locations throughout the seven-county CMAP region, with occasional travel to the CMAP office location.

Travel expenses incurred traveling to field data collection locations and during the course of scheduled data collection activities will be reimbursed; field data collection interns will be expected to keep accurate records of their work travel activity.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities

Field data collectors will travel to field data collection locations by various means, including automobile, public transportation, and Uber/Lyft. A valid driver's license and proof of vehicle insurance for any vehicle to be driven must be provided at time of interview. Applicants should have proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) such as ArcGIS and associated software. Field Data Collection Interns will not be under direct supervision while in the field on their assigned task. A high level of individual responsibility is expected, and self-motivation should be evident.

Equipment

Part of the work will be done remotely therefore interns will need access to a Windows computer, in good working order. If the intern does not have access to this equipment, it can be provided upon request.

  • Internship will last for three months, starting approximately June 1 through September 1, 2023, and will work no more than 29 hours/week. There are limited options to continue on as part-time (up to 19 hours/week) basis into the school year.
  • Minor start and end-date accommodations may be made.
  • Targeted start dates:
    • Group 1: May 30,2023
    • Group 2: June 12, 2023
  • Interns able to participate in person for at least 50% of their hours are preferred. If necessary, CMAP will consider other hybrid work alternatives.
